The Crude Sea
In early 21st Century photography a smear of petroleum jelly onto a clear, glass filter softened and romanticised a subject or scene. Sharp details diffused into a soft focus, dreamy image obscuring reality. I borrow the smear technique to complicate memory and nostalgia, aware that the greasy stuff in the little plastic tub is derived from crude oil.
